marketing is like porn

I know this post is going to frighten some corporate types, but that’s okay.

Look here’s the thing about marketing. It’s supposed to get people excited. Its purpose isn’t to close the deal. That’s what sales people are for. So why are you putting 4000 words of information on the front page of your website or in your brochure or in your advertisements?

STOP TRYING TO CLOSE THE DEAL VIA MARKETING.

Marketing is supposed to get people hard and wet for your product or service. It’s supposed to tease them enough to get them to want to buy you flowers and take you out to dinner.

I don’t know any more if this analogy actually works. Maybe we should stop thinking about it too hard.
